The Weekly Movie Newsletter

Hi {{name | friend}},

This week, we explore the value of what remains unseen. In a world that demands we be loud to be noticed, there is a quiet power in simply existing — in doing the work, honoring the craft, and finding peace in the silence.

The films in Issue 7 mirror this perspective. They aren’t about grand victories, but the dignity found in adaptation and the freedom of the open road. These stories tell us that we don’t need an audience in our most meaningful moments, we keep them to ourselves.

Let’s lean into the stillness.

Issue #07 | The Weekend Watchlist

An A24 film

/ When you are building something from nothing /

First Cow (2019)

Director: Kelly Reichardt

The Story: In the 1820s Pacific Northwest, a shy cook and a Chinese immigrant form a quiet alliance. Living on the edge of a rugged frontier, they hatch a plan to steal milk from the only cow in the territory to bake and sell "oily cakes" to travelers.

  • Why it’s worth your time: It explores the meticulous nature of craftsmanship and the persistence required to start a life with no capital. The film finds drama in the small, tactile details — the pouring of milk, the sweeping of a hut, and the protective silence between friends. It is a look at how even the simplest business requires immense grit when the system is built against you.

  • Trivia: The "first cow" in the movie was actually a 10-year-old Jersey cow named Evie. Director Kelly Reichardt selected her specifically for her friendly temperament, which was essential for the intimate, low-light milking scenes that anchor the film’s tension.

Sound of Metal (2019)

Director: Darius Marder

The Story: A heavy metal drummer’s life is derailed when he rapidly loses his hearing. He enters a secluded sober house for the deaf, where he is challenged to sit in a room alone and find "stillness" while grappling with the loss of his career and identity.

Underrated

  • Why it’s worth your time: The film uses innovative sound design to pull you into the physical and mental space of its lead. It avoids typical melodrama, focusing instead on the grueling, day-to-day work of adaptation. It poses a difficult question: who are you when the one thing you’ve built your life around is taken away?

  • Trivia: Riz Ahmed spent seven months learning American Sign Language (ASL) and how to play the drums for the role. Paul Raci, who plays the mentor Joe, is a "CODA" (Child of Deaf Adults) and is a leader in the deaf community in real life.

Slice-of-Life

/ When home is a path, not a place /

Nomadland (2020)

Director: Chloé Zhao

The Story: Following the economic collapse of her town, a woman in her sixties packs her life into a van and travels across the American West. She works seasonal jobs and joins a community of modern-day nomads who live life outside the traditional structures of society.

  • Why it’s worth your time: It captures a rare sense of independence that comes from having very little. The film is built on the real faces and stories of actual nomads, blending fiction with documentary-style honesty. It highlights the endurance of the human spirit when it is stripped of comfort and forced to find a new way to exist in the world.

  • Trivia: Chloé Zhao became the first woman of color to win the Academy Award for Best Director for this film. To keep the production authentic, Frances McDormand actually lived in her van for several months during filming and worked real seasonal shifts, including a stint at an Amazon fulfillment center.

This week’s highlight

This resonated with me because we live in a world that feels increasingly loud.

We are often told that to be valuable, we must be seen. But the most profound parts of your life — the quiet kindness, the hard work done in private, the moments you just "stay in" — don't need an audience to be real. You don't have to shout to be significant.
